This scene is inspired by rural California, in the high desert between the big bear mountains. It is a landscape and area of contradictions and I wanted the painting to reflect this. The beautiful intense blue of the sky is juxtaposed with a strange and bleak scene below. I have used traditional glazes to build up the quality of the colour in the sky.
In that area of North America many are struggling with few employment prospects and poverty, this and it’s history of conflict I felt created a heavy atmosphere.
I stayed among a farming community and whilst there heard of a horrendous story of a horse that was tied to a Joshua Tree and left to starve when it was no longer affordable to feed. For me this painting is a poignant reminder of this and how even in the wealthiest of countries poverty is prevalent.
